St. Joe, Indiana

St. Joe map

Overview

St. Joe is located in rural northeast Indiana about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne.  It is the crossing of the Norfolk Southern Huntington District and the CSX Garrett Subdivision mainlines.  There is also a connecting track at the northwest corner of the diamonds that CSX uses to access the Steel Dynamics (SDI) plant just north of here.

Operations

CSX runs a lot of trains on this line.  A dual crossover is located just west of the crossing diamonds.  NS traffic is also fairly busy through here, as well.  I do not recommend going to the St. Joe crossing diamonds.  The diamonds are largely inaccessible by vehicle and the county road to access the crossing is a dead end at the CSX tracks.  Photography angles are not very good here, either. The County Road 55 crossing west of the diamonds is usually okay for train watching, as are the grade crossings in St Joe, but your safest and best place for watching CSX action around here on this line is in nearby Garrett.
