MAW power

In Defiance resides the MAW 16, WBCR 3, and an ex-ATSF Geep (345, maybe?). Last weekend when I was there, the ATSF unit was idling, and the # 3 looked like it hadn't seen service for quite some time. I've only ever seen # 16 doing work between Defiance & Liberty Center, OH. Would really like to see WBCR 3 running again......

While on my way to Harlen last Thursday AM saw #7 and 1 car backing down the line near hwy 101 got this photo

7 rests quietly in Woodburn this weekend, wrapping up another extremely slow week of railroading on MAW. Anyone know when trackwork will begin on the line???

The depot is history. well maybe not completly ! I went to Defiance with 3 other people and removed the drive and therefore I have part of the Depot with me, about 118,000 pounds to be more accurate and will be putting it back down latter this year that is also over 10,000 pavers.
The dopot did not stand a change at being spared, short of Amtrak using it as a stop but Amtrak doesn't ply this rails anymore and when they did the City did not warrant a stop, the depot is situated (was) right next to the tracks.. LIABILITY must go.
Was told it was a neat station as you entered the passenger platform from below the tracks and then you went upstairs between the set of tracks, I suspect that there were more than 2 tracks at this loacation during the passenger years.
As more the MAW it seems to do a modest business, spped is not of concern for these guys, they are not in a hurry, I have said it before and will say it again, This is the most Motley looking RR I've seen, but I love shortlines, If they could extract oil from the ground or ballast, well maybe the dirt since ballast is sparce, they could run there engines for some time.
I have read on another list that WBCR#3 is GONE, like someone on the west coast, was it a GP18 or 20. I thought it was a gp9. the thing looked rough but I say it in service 2-3 years back. I guess I should follow up on that.
CSX has to be loving this, I mean the MAW, CSX has been dropping 89' box cars that are taken to the Johns-Manfields plant in Defiance something tells me these cars originate somewhere on CSX and they can use 89' cars demand for those has probably slowed.
This line seems to move a fair share of cars, this is part of the 5th district ? isnt this the same company and basically the same track that is in Bluffton IN ? its Motley also ! but handles alot of cars also, makes enough to pay the bills, but not to rehab the rails,
Is the diamond going back in ? I will laugh a$$ off if it happens mmmmm.... stranger things have happened..

Good to hear they went to a good use rather than the dump. Yes, this is part of the 5th District, but no, it's not the same line as the one though Bluffton. Thats part of the old Cloverleaf I believe, and is owned by the Wabash Central. I have heard them a couple times in the last couple weeks getting permission from the NCD dispatcher to unlock the crossovers and go to the other side for a bit.

MAW/WBCR# 3

WBCR 3 is now WRIX 3, is probably by now in Washinton State

Per) Mike Hawkins it is 7583-4, nee GN 2003 to BN 2003:1 to IHRC 203 to WAER 2003 to WBCR 3 to WRIX 3.

Here is pic on its way west, I wouldn't think someone would pull it across the US just to take a tourch to it.

Wabash Central is a different RR company than the M&W, but they are owned by the same holding company along with the Connersville & Newcastle and some other transportation operations, can't remember the holding company's name right now.

The MAW has some of the saddest looking track i have ever seen. Reminds me of HCRC tracks back in the 1980s..

#7 in trouble again

MAW #7 (exICG8442) is undergoing major repair work again today in Woodburn. The specialists are doing some extensive engine work on her. Hopefully she won't leak as much now.

How can major repairs be done in Woodhen?
Why can't they just ship it over to Larry's Truck and Electric
and get it fixed? Oh, I'll answer my own question. The diamonds
are still out in Defiance.

Commercial services such as Silcott are set up to do some rather major mechanical work at remote locations. You might not do a complete engine overhaul that way, but at the Whitewater Valley RR we've had them in to change a cylinder liner when one needed changing for example.

Possible Derailment?

While cruising down US 24 from Detroit yesterday on my way back to the Fort, I noticed just east of Defiance on the MAW it looked like they were up-righting box cars. There was an engine (could'nt tell the number) 2 box cars a big space and a couple of back hoes on eachside of the tracks near the next set of cars.
