Heritage Units

Post by Notch 8 » Sun Feb 10, 2008 9:03 am

Union Pacifc did Heritage units of RR's that lead up to what the UP is today
and this has me thinking that if NS or CSX were to do the same what former
roads should get these honors.
Since this is a public forum I thought I might throw this out for some input,
while the catfish scheme is pratical it gets old. NKP black & yellow could look
great on a GEVO or SD70.

Also how many trains a day go through Fort Wayne in a 24 our period ? and
how many on the CF&E in a 24 hour period as well ?

I agree, a NKP scheme would be pretty neat, as would a Wabash.

On a side note I have read that UP has said they will repaint those units someday; they arn't planning on keeping them in that scheme forever. So if you hear that one is headed your way, you better get your shot of it as you may never get that chance again.

As for Ft Wayne train count...well that has many variables. If you're asking how many trains traverse the city in a given day, I'd say that number is around 50-75. But remember that NS forms a rough triangle in town and not every train goes through every junction. You'll see the most trains if you sit at Mike for 24hours, probably followed by Hugo then NE.

As for the CF&E there is the following that I know of.

2 runs to Lima and back daily, 1 run to Chicago and back daily, 1 run to Warsaw and back daily, occaisional trips to Decatur and the CSX grain trains that sometimes run through, although that seems to be more seasonal I think.

I did once see the moon fall out of the sky! No wait that was a Conrail engine that lost the charger and blew a flame about 20 ft high.
Then also I seen a Dyno fan let go and took off like a Helo and landed in the corn field that was across from us.
Are ya sure that wasnt DE ????????????????? Kevin

CSX has a heritage unit program! I caught Seaboard 2667 at Wellsboro last April.

Ryan,

Typically when you see an engine that has flames shooting out of the top of the exhaust stack, it has a blown turbocharger. When the turbocharger breaks it can send raw fuel into the exhaust pipe of the engine causing it to catch fire and billow out thick black smoke and shoot huge flames into the air. It's an awesome sight to see going by especially at night. I've been standing next to the tracks before when a train came by with a blown turbo and I got rained on by diesel fuel falling from the air.

I have had many turbochargers go out on the Semi before. My most recent one bellowed out such thick smoke I thought i was at the controls of UP 844. Cruising down I69 with noone wanting to pass me
