The Fort Wayne Railfan

Another shot of the former Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad with this one being at Avilla Indiana. Craig Berndt took this shot looking north on the line now owned by Conrail on November 10th, 1979. The track in the foreground was the B&O and was single track at the time. I took the current shot on 11/27/2021 with the former GR&I being long gone and the now CSX Garrett Sub double tracked. While this was double tracked and then single tracked in the 60's, CSX ended up putting the other main back in to prepare for the Conrail split in 1998/1999.

While it is sad the GR&I is gone, if it had survived, there is a chance the New Castle District would not have been upgraded like it was.
