Erie Western and Ferdinand Railroads, 1997

Post by cjberndt » Thu Nov 01, 2018 6:37 am

This photo of an Erie & Western covered hopper rebadged as Ferdinand Railroad #4277 was taken in October 1997 in Bellevue, Ohio. That was 18 years after Erie & Western operations ended, and six years after the Ferdinand was abandoned.

The FRDN reporting mark was retained by Itel Rail when it sold the Ferdinand in 1990, and has been passed to several successor companies. When I last checked on it in 2010, there were still 11 freight cars with the FRDN mark.

It is still alive but apparently not in use by the Bay Line Railroad, one Genesee & Wyoming's subsidiaries.

If I win the lottery, I would track down one of these hoppers, buy it and donate it to the HVRM. It would be a nice addition to their freight car collection! :)
The sweetest sounds in the world: A pair 567's at idle, and a non turbo 645 in run 8!
