Well someone tried to have some fun.
Monday 07May18 NS train 25A was stopped somewhere between Bluffton and Montpelier ( I think it was Keystone) with the police on-site. Three intoxicated trespassers were removed from the train. Unfortunately, their dogs who were brought along for the ride got incarcerated in the pound. I could hear the dispatcher talking to 177 who was stuck behind 25A that the dogs were getting aggressive and it took even longer to remove them from the train. (did they have to wait for the dog-catch crew to show up)
Modern Day Hobo's ! Love to hear the back story !!

not too many details have been released to the public. Two guys and a girl were waaay over the legal limit. They were from TX, NY and PA, so not sure how they came together on the train.

FYI
Greenplains LLC sold the Bluffton Ethanol Plant to Velaro. It was a part of a package of three ethanol plants. There was a quote from the president of Greenplains stating the three plants was only 20% of their capacity and there were some transfers of rail equipment and storage.

The article in the local paper had no details on what Valero will do: keep everything the same, increase production, reduce production. Currently, the plant is shut down (no plume from the stack) and I saw several cranes around the grain bins this week. The last ethanol train left Monday and went to the Fort.

The plume is back (the plant is running). NS called a special L6Z local to finish switching the ethanol plant on a Sunday. ( I think they needed the power back in the fort more than the plant needed switched.)

Elmer and Elsie have been reassigned as NS7130 was still sitting at the West end of the plant this morning where L69 died last night.

Guess who's back?

yup NS 196 and 197 are back running on the NCD. Not sure what the endpoints are yet, but fairly certain they run the full NCD, Cincy-Fort.

Dispatcher told the relief crew for L69 they had to wait for a "wreck train" to back around HUGO.
Was there a wreck somewhere that required a wreck train, or did I mis-hear?

More DPU on the NCD:
This past week, I've seen several versions of train 702 running South out of the fort. (I assume it is coming in from Chicago) It is a LOADED coal train with up to 137 cars. So far, only BNSF power on this train and 2x2 with the DPUs on the tail. One day, they stopped the train in Kingsland siding to set up the DPU since it arrived with all four units on the point.
NS 142 had DPU fairly regularly, but I haven't seen it lately.
NS 123/124 that head to/from Frankfort/Lafayette/Peoria? at Muncie, seem to have DPU mid-train when they get over 100 cars.

I saw one of these trains the other day, and photographed it at Nuttman Avenue, but left before the end of the train. I never gave it a thought that it might have DPUs on it. DANG.

Ha! you know what they say when you assume.
It's interesting as historically, very little coal has moved on the NCD. I don't know if this is a new train (i.e. won this round of delivery contracts), a temporary re-route from flooding elsewhere, or an experiment to see if DPU can overcome their reluctance to run coal this way. I've only seen it for two weeks, so can't say one way or the other on its permanence.

And just like that, the coal train is gone. I haven't seen it in a week now.

Did NS change their policy on calling signals? Radio has been eerily quiet since the beginning of July. Even the local isn't very talkative while switching the ethanol plant.

The reason the scanner has been quiet, is they switched channels. They appear to be using 93 (161.355) North of Muncie and the same 22 (160.44) South.

Anyone else notice truckloads of truck frames heading North on I-69?
I wonder if the GM plant is starting to send some via truck since 288 seems to be very erratic lately. (they could be going elsewhere, the inconsistent schedule remains as a deterrent to using rail for a Just In Time manufacturing operation.

L69 is now coming out of Muncie. I heard an L82 working the ethanol plant one day, and then back to L 69. I'm guessing they had to abolish the East Wayne L69 before "creating" the Muncie L69 job. So far, they have been using 6-axle power instead of 4-axle.

This morning a brace of light power went North.

A lot of crossings are closed North of Bluffton which means the surfacing gang is in the neighborhood.

143 seems be using DPU consistently. 117 is gone. Interesting train while it lasted.

What route does 143 use thru Fort Wayne?
I would like to catch it.

RE: 143

AFAIK, it starts in Elkhart, so if it comes through the fort, it comes South on the Marion District at Goshen. At Claypool, it turns East on the former NKP Chicago District past Hadley Road. It jumps on the connector at HILL to get to the ex PRR. It used to change crews at Thomas Rd or down at JUNCTION where it turns south onto the New Castle District and points South.

If it doesn't come to Fort Wayne, it stays on the Marion District all the way to ALEX (Alexandria), then the Frankfort District to Muncie, then the New Castle to Cincinnati and points South.

So area road crossings you can see it are Scott Rd, Hadley Rd, Thomas Rd, Ardmore overpass, Jefferson viaduct, Taylor St, Covington Rd, Nuttman Ave, Engle Rd, Sandpoint Rd, Lower Huntington Rd, Airport Expressway, Ferguson Rd, Winters Rd, Lafayette (Pleasant) Center Rd, Hamilton Rd, Yoder Rd, and so on.
