N&W 1256

Post by Wayne Gest » Thu Jun 11, 2020 7:14 pm

N&W Class Y steam locomotive 1256 will be passing through Fort Wayne sometime tomorrow, June 12. It is being taken in tow back to the transportation museum in St. Louis. It can be tracked, somewhat, on a Facebook site.

It is now somewhere south of Chillicothe, Ohio.

So when they move an old steam engine like this, "dead in tow" for a considerable distance, are there any special preps for the running gear? Mineral oil in the cylinders or anything like that?

Those are great photos! It appears from looking at those that the answer to my question is that they partially remove some of the running gear, so that the wheel movement does not drag the pistons through needless movement?

That's a remarkable steam engine, and it only gives us that much more to appreciate that the FWRHS carried their restoration through to the point of operation.

Wonder what NS would charge for a movement like that? Their raw costs would have to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

I have no idea what they would charge, but this one was a freebie. Besides towing #2156 From St. Louis and Roanoke and back, towing the museum's DDA40X from St. Louis to Altoona, painting it and returning it to St Louis was part of this deal. I have my doubts you could get anything like that accomplished with the current administration at Norfolk Southern. They were already committed to take #2156 back to St. Louis when the "loan" was over.
If my opinions offend you, you should see the ones I keep to myself........
