ND&W Photos

Post by cptp1973 » Wed Feb 20, 2019 12:57 pm

Does anyone have any photos of any maintenance projects on the ND&W? I have viewed some old YouTube videos showing the horrible track conditions. I am wanting to see if much progress has been made.

I will post some later, but they added 1000's of ties and have dropped ballast and tamped, Still looks rough in many areas but they have been keeping the cars on the rails.. hard to fix 60 years of deferred maintenance ! and then on top of that it's built on a swamp and lacks drainage.

I was done a little on the early side today and went and took some pics of the ND&W starting in Okolona, Jewell, over to Cecil Ohio.

Thanks for the update. Although it's hard to believe it looks allot better than the Hi-Rail days. Ken

It still looks terrible but they do keep the wheels on the rails ! But yes it is better... terrible place for a railroad.. on a swamp and nowhere to drain..

It takes more than you think to derail a train.

But then, the smallest defect will put one on the ground despite what happened in that video.

My point is bad track is only one slice of swiss cheese. Other factors have to be in play for all the holes in the slices to line up and you get a derailment.

Looks like a rail broke and turned over.

Quick question, I often see this phenomenon in photos that I take. I know the tracks are in no where near as bad condition as the photo makes them appear. You can be standing there in person and the track looks fine....Much of the distortion in in the camera. I always thought it had something to do with "depth of field"

What actually causes this?

Compression and the track really does look poop.. but looks okay in other places.. See what happens when you build a RR on a swamp ?

I've shot photos of track that actually was in pretty good condition, that once photo'ed it "noodled" out like the rail in your photo.
I think you are right when you say "compression"...but I think it has something to do with the amount of zoom, causing a "compression" of sorts in the depth of field.

With my low end Kodak Z-650 using the optical as well as digital zoom, I can still get a fairly decent photo of distant objects, so long as I focus alone on that distant object. But if I try to incorporate the foreground, I get distortion like that in your pic.

Mind you, I'm not saying that the track in that area does not have it's problems, I'm sure that it does. But cameras have a way of amplifying that sort of thing.
