Corunna Signals

Post by Notch 8 » Thu Feb 21, 2008 5:39 am

The old signals at Corunna are now history ! the new mast and signals are up and
in service and about 50' to the east of the former location to accomodate the the
replacement of the bridge over the Waterlevel route @ St Rd 327.
They are busy with bridges in this area, Corunna replacement, Kendallville gets a
bridge @ 1000 E. over the Waterlevel Route and CSX west of Avilla is getting a
bridge as well.
Sure beats at grade crossings. the bridge that is the funniest, is the one that got
built over the INER in Angola IN for 5-6 trains a week. I like the bridge for photo
opportunities, Its our goverments knucleheaded way of how to do things. we have
money in this bridge fund and besides it make Angola appear more Metropolitan.

My 2 cents

That was quick. I drove through there last week and didn't see any signals West of SR327. Maybe if I had stopped instead of cruising along on US6.

The State of Indiana has entered into an agreement that the St Rd 327 overpass
will be replaced by Primco of Fort Wayne, this is to be completed by November !
Another era is ending....
This was the reason the signals were relocated.

The new signals that were installed are tri-color with hoods, however I
noticed the other day that the lower 2 colors are now painted over atleast
the one on the north side of the track, does this mean the lense that is in
the top position so all aspects ? and if so why a head unit that would show all 3.

Maybe they are going to add a set of crossovers somewhere out that way? It sure seems like good idea the way things run east of 412, not many options out that way for as busy and diverse line that is.

Actually not sure why the look painted over but each light works and displays it's correct aspect.

See my last picture of it from the 4th of May. As you can see the Red is clearly lit up on the bottom of the west facing north signal.

Should be an interesting project.. more later !

I drove by this morning and the side truss beams are still in-place. I haven't heard of a flagman on-site and I can't imagine NS letting them remove a bridge that could drop on the track without one. I wouldn't want to be an engineer and see a beam falling toward me while I'm rolling along.

Went by again today and heard B43 getting permission to pass a "stop board" at MP 173. Flagman let them go on Track 1 at track speed. I noticed the East side sidewalk was gone, so the dismantling has started.

I went by there last week and on the South Side of the bridge they have new storm inlets 6 feet in the air, so the highway grade is going to change drastically. It doesn't bode well for the refreshement joint on the East side of SR 327 south of the tracks.

I'll definitely miss that bridge. I've stood on top of it quite a few times at night while a doublestack train has gone under at 60. It's a scary rush like no other as your impulse is to jump out of the way or brace for impact. I took a non-railfan friend of mine there once and he was addicted to it after the first time.
