CFE gets $4.5 million grant...

Post by bnsf8000 » Tue Sep 22, 2020 11:10 pm

The CFE has been given a $4.5 million grant. They will replace 10.8 miles of jointed rail with welded rail. Install new ballast and ties. Replace 7 turnouts and rehabilitate another. Rebuild yard tracks in Lima, OH and Fort Wayne, IN. The info was in an article from Trains magazine or newswire under the heading about a rail grant for North Carolina. Also, the ND&W is getting $4.1 million to replace 10 miles of 80lb rail with 132# or 136#. Replace 29,000 ties on 29 miles of track between Defiance, OH and Woodburn, IN. 4 RJ Corman routes in Ohio will get improvements of $2.2 million.

Nice chunk of change. This will help (a little, I know) keep them a going concern.

Not sure if I believe that the ND&W will get 132# - 136# rail unless it re-lay 115# stick rail makes the most sense but it is certainly good News !

Does the government grant allow for the use of used materials, or does it HAVE to be new? If it has to be new, how many rail sizes are readily available? Regardless, if it is new rail, I sure hope it's coming from Columbia City.....

That's a good question.
NS is using 136# rail from SDI to replace both rails on the New Castle District from Muncie to the Fort. It takes a lot of work to swap out the extrusion plate and all the shaping rollers in a mill like SDI. They prefer, obviously, to produce huge batches of one size.
To stay within the time limits of the grants, they may have no choice but to use what is readily available. Look for some compromise joint bars coming soon to a rail line near you.

The 136# makes no sense and yes this will make for some funky comp bars :D but it is certainly good news for this line.. It has steady traffic and all the production for Campbell Soups seemed to have been shifted to the Napoleon Facility so traffic should increase. They (Campbells) have put their DC in Findlay.

Food for thought, I wonder if the rail coming off the CF&E will be used as the relay rail on the ND&W??

I think a lot of that stick rail on the Pennsy dates from the 1950's, but that's probably at LEAST 30 years newer than what the old Wabash has.
