Traffic since Covid-19

Post by Notch 8 » Thu Apr 30, 2020 2:58 pm

Has anyone paid attention to the downturn in certain traffic since the Covid pandemic put brakes on the Economy ?

Automotive put a damper on things and the price of oil makes ethanol not very viable and puts the skids on Fracking..

Indiana Northeastern has been taking tank cars in for storage. Sign of the Times !

It's certainly down, and the lack of auto traffic is kind of conspicuous, but I still see and hear quite a few trains.

Isn't the cement distributor at the end of the line? INDOT and others are still using concrete, so it should be busy.

Honestly, I would have to take your word on that, I'm not sure who their customers are. I just hear their horns occasionally.

The salt warehouse on State is the #1 customer, the cement distributor would be #2. Stonhard gets a few cars and Foundation Building Materials on Goshen has been known to get a centerbeam from time to time. There is other potential out there, but with the Class One's attitude toward loose car railroading, it's hard to make rail shipment make sense, so they hand the business over to us truckers on a silver platter. I WILL say that considering the relatively few customers, Norfolk Southern seems to serve the GR&I often, but I think the Tristate business drives that. My guess is a good shortline marketing team could raise the carload numbers substantially.
