Post by Notch 8 » Wed Nov 15, 2017 6:59 am

Straight outta Hammond !

NKP 624 is 1 more step closer to Fort Wayne and will begin a cosmetic restoration and
evaluation to see if it is roadworthy.. One of only three preserved NKP 2-8-2's, this one
was donated to Hammond, IN on 9/13/55 The caboose that was on display with 624 now
resides near Ashley IN at GLW pics taken 11/14/17

Yeah, that does look sad, unless you know (think) it will be moved soon. Got to get it down to easy trailer-able chunks.

We completed the ultrasound inspection of 624 earlier this year.

Believe it or not, the boiler and firebox are in remarkably good condition. My guess would be that the NKP did a Class 3 inspection on the 624 in the early 50s shortly before it was retired in 1955.
