It's Baaaack

Postby rrnut282 » Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:05 am

I didn't have the scanner on this weekend, but I swear there were trains that looked very familiar in their make-up. Then, this morning, I heard loud and clear 197's crew asking for a ride to Peru. Traffic has finally rebounded enough for NS to reinstate train 197. Yeah. :)

Have any other recently departed train symbols been resurrected??

Another familiar face (symbol) has returned to the the New Castle District.

25A has returned to life after a hiatus due to the economic doldrums of last year. This intermodal train used to occasionally run on the Pennsy out of Chicago to keep NS's trackage rights on the CF&E active. So far, I've only heard/seen it heading East (South) on the NCD. Is it still coming from Chicago?

25A is going Landers Yard Chicago to Danville, KY again and is many times rating 3 units due to its tonnage. I believe the 236 is going through Bellevue & down through Columbus now on the new Corridor. Not sure about the 235.

Now that you mention it, it has been a while since I've seen or heard 235 going through. I have seen an intermodal going through Bluffton about 0700-0830 that I thought was a late running 236. Could it have been an early 25A?

Yes, 25A, usually running behind 295.

236 originates at the Rickenbacker Intermodal Facility now.

197: It's Baaaack

Postby rrnut282 » Sun Jul 24, 2011 2:48 pm

I'm getting worried (like NS cares about my feelings  ) that 197 may be annulled again. When reinstated, it came back with a vengence sometimes exceeding 100 cars. Fast forward to July 2011 and 40 is a huge train. I've seen as few as 9, yes that's not a typo, 9. Since NS is in business to make money, not run trains, you might want to keep an eye on this train in case it disappears again.

142 Rolled North on the NCD to the fort. Today's version had 2x1 DPU power. I know there have been other DPU powered trains, but this is the first I've seen in the daylight. 197 still soldiers on along with 177 and 143.

I heard the dispatcher talking to L16 and L17. Where do they go, I'm not familiar with them.

Are those DPU units located on the back of the train? I saw one rolling North across Taylor Avenue around 7:30 Pm Friday 5/5/17 and wondered if this was the same as you report?

Why would they utilize DPU across the flat soybean fields of Indiana?

I saw the same train Friday at HUGO. :D
I assume the DPU is left on for areas that aren't flat. The climb out of Cincy is a good one. Many trains have stalled on the hill outside of New Castle. I myself have witnessed a coal train stall on the hill between Junction and Sand in Fort Wayne. If 142 goes North on the Marion District, it isn't very flat. Also remember, extra dynamic braking is a good thing.
