RoadRailer almost made it 4 Decades

Longtime Fort Wayne business, Triple Crown Services, is moving its headquarters out of Fort Wayne. An employee confirmed to WANE 15 the last day for employees in July 31, 2020.

So I thought it would be interesting to post this article that is 39 years old..

Passenger unit? Those must be the ones that had shackles in them? :mrgreen:

I recall when NS first started operating over off Brooklyn Ave...I think you guys call it "New" yard. I was living out west, but my mother was living right across the river from there, and she used to complain endlessly about the noise, all night long.
I had no idea at the time what "Triple Crown" even was, or what their operation entailed. But it sure had her "lit up".

By the time I had moved back here, they had all but abandoned "New" yard in favor of what was left of the yard over off Anthony.

Were there ever any historic derailments of road railer trains? Don't know that I ever heard of any.

I didn't even know there still WERE any Triple Crown people here or anywhere else. I thought when they paired down operations they transferred all the TC work to the intermodal department. I had a friend that worked in IT out there at Auburn Road or whatever that office park is called out there, and I thought when he got let go that the whole facility was shuttered and ALL employees let go or transferred to other operations within NS.

RoadRailer was not the only service that was tested.

There were several minor mishaps in Piqua Yard and at least two that I'm aware of around the Piqua Wye, the connecting track built west of Anthony. I'm also aware of a couple at Muncie by the Muncie East Yard.

The New Yard wasn't anything but a short term fix for a facility at Fort Wayne. People using Brooklyn Avenue and Nuttman sure suffered from the constant blockage. I don't know if NS knew at the time that they were going to get a chance to move into the old PRR Piqua Yard or not.

When did the Triple Crown office open in Fort Wayne?

There was another TC train on its side down in GA. Glynnwood or somesuch place. I have photos of the aftermath stored somewhere.

TC was a trucking company first and foremost. As they used less rail, they still had some contract trucking to do.

Anyone have thoughts into the decision making process of why Ft Wayne was selected to be the main hub?

More of a crash than a derailment, but on March 25, 1998, a southbound NS road-railer on the Huntington District collided with an eastbound fConrail train at Butler crossing. The NS conductor was killed.

I'm thinking Fort Wayne was centralized in the network and from FW trains could go N,S & E,W relatively easily.. and then there is the Auto Artery

Okay, that makes sense. One small nit-pick....didn't they reach Dallas through Meridian Mississippi, not St Louis?

I also have a vague memory of seeing BNSF pulling a string of roadrailers south from Kansas City, perhaps a picture in a magazine.

Both trains will run 4 days a week. 255 will run Su, Tu-Th and 256 will run Tu-Th, Sa.
255 schedule:
Depart Detroit Oakwood, MI 02:20
Crew change Peru, IN 09:15
Crew change Decatur, IL 14:45
Crew change Moberly, MO 21:10
Arrive Voltz, MO 01:05
256 schedule:
Depart Kansas City Avondale, MO 00:25
Depart Voltz, MO 02:30
Crew change Moberly, MO 06:30
Crew change Decatur, IL 13:45
Crew change Peru, IN 21:25
Arrive Detroit Oakwood, MI 03:30
