A group in Ohio chartered the Toledo and Illinois Railroad April 20, 1853 to build from Toledo on Lake Erie west to the Indiana state line.

A separate group in Indiana chartered the Lake Erie, Wabash and St. Louis Railroad later that year to continue the line west into Illinois towards St. Louis, Missouri. (they were paralleling the Wabash river a great deal of the way).

Later, those two merged and kept Wabash in their name. Later this entity merged with other outfits already operating to the west. I guess "Wabash" just had a nice ring to it, the name worked it's way into several succeeding companies names through merger, bankruptcy, reorganization, and what not.
