NS 368

Post by jett37 » Wed Aug 12, 2015 11:45 am

Any one (Wayne Gest) know where this train originates and terminates? NS 368. When I have seen it they came from the South of Muncie, stopped at East yards and then continued on West. (North.

368 is supposed to be the flip of 369 which is a Fort (East) Wayne to Muncie super-local. 369/368 replaced the old 417, if you remember that train symbol.

Thanks Mike, I guess that means it comes from New Haven. Wonder how far South it goes, Richmond? It's consist looks an awful lot like a L84 that comes from Richmond.

Things could have changed after all these years, but AFAIK it only goes to Muncie. I have seen it hauling factory-fresh EMDs North, so maybe it fetches them from the factory itself, if the other locals can't get there.

368 came into Elkhart this morning. Is this a new routing, or something temporary. I did hear that a couple of new trains were added to the Marion Branch recently.

So it was 368 and not 365? NS has been known to change symbols on a regular basis.

I would say that it is 368 as the cars it had were basically Muncie cars.

Meshberger hoppers

Poet DDG hoppers/ Ethanol tanks

Silica/Soda ash hoppers

it was about 50 cars

I'll pay more attention in the evenings to see if it is still coming through Bluffton.

It looks like 368&369 replaced 311&312, so it must be running the branch to Marion, then on to Elkhart. I wonder if it is a test or something else.

It doesn't seem to be on the North end of the NCD anymore. :(

The "test" is working out mostly ok so far. This is taking cars away from Ft Wayne all together as the previous 368/369 took cars to and from the Fort and then they went to Elkhart on the 365/366. The new routing up the Branch avoids the middleman (Ft Wayne) as they go directly Muncie-Elk-Muncie. The 368 picks up downtown Marion cars/engine(s) on the way to Elkhart and the 369 sets off the Marion block downtown, then heads to Muncie.

Marion has been running a bit short on engines as the 311/312 don't run anymore, so the 369 always sets off at least one engine heading south and the 368 will pick up whatever motors are with the cars downtown for the run to Elkhart. Muncie has plenty of newer AC locomotives cycling in and out because the power all comes from Elkhart now. When it came from Ft Wayne, Muncie got a lot of the older beat up power, but not so much now with the new routing and Elkhart providing the locos.

Look for another Muncie local soon (symbol not determined yet) that will run Muncie-Richmond-Muncie taking cars down to the L84/L81 and return to Muncie with empties. This will eliminate the need for the L84 to come up to Muncie then take the train south back to Richmond. They could resurrect the old L88 symbol for this job as it's not currently in use on the system. I imagine jett37 will be getting photos of her soon!!
