Scanner feed

Post by Bob Durnell » Tue Jan 17, 2006 11:43 am

Yesterday I tried the scanner feed for the first time. I put it on my computer at work for about six hours. What a hoot! It worked REALLY good. I had tried listening a few times in the past with a handheld unit and wasn't very impressed with it, but this is great. I like the lady that worked in the afternoon. It was cool to hear the trains call signals and then hear the actual train rumble by my work. GREAT JOB Greg!

Glad you like it Bob. Some days you'll hear more than others just depending on the weather and how well radio waves are propigating up my way.
The DS in the afternoon you mentioned is Laura. You'll hear a lot of crews call her by name. The first shift guy is Larry I believe. Believe me, you'll get to know all of their voices and personalities very well as you listen.

There was a situation yesterday with a broken rail on the Huntington District between Mike and Meyer Road, and it got really interesting with track crews making repairs and the dispatchers trying to keep traffic moving on only one track. My hat's off to the dispatchers. They have a TON of responsibility and I doubt they get much credit. To me it's like trying to juggle chainsaws.

listening at work

Post by rrnut282 » Wed Jan 18, 2006 7:47 am

I listen at work also, so it seems like I'm not missing that much by not being trackside. It really makes the day roll by faster. My friend is jealous because he's got a computer without a sound card (company saving money). He finds reasons to come and "talk" (more like listen) all day long. To prevent it from being a distraction to the neighbors in the next cubicle, I also stream the audio from a radio station that uploads its own player so I can dedicate Media Player to the scanner feed. :D

I wish I was able to stream it at work, that'd make my day go alot faster. Except I work in a kitchen and the place doens't have internet access :(

Yea, it is down right now. I've restarted it twice now and it's still not coming back online. I'm going to have to pull it inside and take a look on a monitor. I just got 2 new servers this week and a scanner that I"m going to try with ATCS from my location so the audio may be up and down for the next few hours as I get things worked out.

Not to be a pain, but I'm still having problems with the audio feed on Tuesday 14th. Is it me?

Yes it is, unfortunitely. I just rebooted it again, we'll see how long it keeps up this time. It baffles me because this same computer used to be my webserver. It never froze up on me. I guess with a newer OS it's not as stable though. Oh well, it need be, I can take it back to Windows 98.
