  • Holiday Shutdown:  NS had quite a few trains parked in Fort Wayne/New Haven over the Christmas shutdown.  Some included 61R, 236, & I15.  Operations resumed this morning around 8am.
  • Upcoming Loss Of Local Amtrak Service:  I have not seen an official press release yet, but on or around January 26, 2003 Amtrak will most likely discontinue operation of the Pennsylvanian (Nos. 44 & 43) west of Pittsburgh, PA.  These 2 trains have been operating daily between Chicago and Philadelphia, PA since 1998 with stops at Waterloo, Indiana in the morning and at night.  This will leave only the Lake Shore Limited and the Capitol Limited stopping at Waterloo.

  • Circus Train Runs On New Castle District:  Monday night (12/2) NS 047, the Ringling Brothers Circus train, made an appearance in Fort Wayne enroute from  Chicago to Savannah, GA.  Routing used was Chicago District to Junction then New Castle District south.  He stopped at Junction for nearly an hour watering the animals.  He departed from there about 7:00pm.  Power was 6553/6124.
  • OmniSource Site Revival:  Last night Fort Wayne City Council approved the redevelopment of the former OmniSource site along Clinton St.  Current plans are for a housing development.  Hopefully, the freight depot will remain.  The ex-NYC track here has recently been severed from the Chicago District.  Click here for the article from today's Journal-Gazette.  Click here for the article from last night's News Sentinel.

  • NS 265?  I have heard this train coming into Triple Crown from the east at least 3 times now.  Any ideas what train this might be?
  • Fort Wayne May Be On High Speed Rail Route:  INDOT released a report on a year long study about the Chicago-Cleveland HSR corridor.  This article came from yesterday's News Sentinel:
Fort Wayne recommended for high-speed rail route
By Doug LeDuc of The News-Sentinel
Posted on Thu, Nov. 21, 2002

If a high-speed Amtrak passenger rail service project ever gets federal funding, Fort Wayne should be on its route, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The department, Amtrak and the Ohio Railroad Development Commission today released results of a year-long study examining alternative high-speed rail passenger routes across northern Indiana.

The results were summarized during a news conference at the Baker Street Station, where passengers once boarded trains bound for major Midwest cities. They favored a route through Fort Wayne over a route through South Bend, but suggested improvements for South Bend's passenger rail service to Chicago.

Because it will contribute to economic development, "northeast Indiana is going to benefit and our state's going to benefit," said Fort Wayne Mayor Graham Richard.

The train could travel at a maximum speed of 120 mph, compared with a current maximum of 79 mph. And a trip between Fort Wayne and Chicago would take between 105 minutes and 115 minutes, depending on the number of stops.

News
  • Circus Train Appearance:  The Ringling Brothers circus train passed through Fort Wayne yesterday evening on the Huntington District about 5:30pm as NS 047 enroute to St. Louis, MO.  Unfortunately, when I heard him the first time on the radio he was calling the signal at East Roanoke.
  • New GM Train:  NS started running an L90 from East Wayne Yd. to the GM plant in Roanoke, IN the last week or so.  It has been a pretty long empty auto rack train the few times I've seen it.  On Sunday it had 3 locomotives.

News
  • Huntington/Fostoria District Train Changes:  Last week NS began running NS 272, a Kansas City-Bellevue auto rack train that has some double-stacks on the rear in the fashion of 207 & 208.  It appears that trains 207 & 208 have been discontinued through here, as well.  No word on a counterpart westbound yet.

News
  • New Triple Crown/NS Channel in Fort Wayne:  Not sure when they started using it around here, but I noticed the other day that the new Triple Crown Yard frequency is 160.950 [AAR Ch.56].  Once trains get into the yard, they use this channel for inner-yard communications.  The dispatchers can also transmit on this frequency to talk to trains.  This eliminates the yard traffic that was on the road channels.
  • Indiana Northeastern Expands Trackage: Effective 11/1/02 the Indiana Northeastern will be taking over the former Michigan Southern trackage between Coldwater and Sturgis, Michigan. Click here for the STB filing about this.  Thanks to Nick for passing along the information on this.

News
  • Remote Control Begins At East Wayne:  The past couple of days I've been hearing the 5243 remote voice on 161.190 and 160.440.  I'm not sure if it officially has begun in full operation but there is a new neon green sign at Estella Ave. that says "remote controlled locomotives in operation...cabs may be unoccupied, etc."  Also there is a new road that leads into the yard at this crossing.  Click here for a sample transmission recorded yesterday.
  • Upcoming Deshler Crossroads Park Fundraiser:  On Saturday, November 9 there will be a fundraiser at the Deshler, Ohio Crossroads Railfan Park beginning at 3pm.  The guys from Cincinnati will be bringing Camp Washington Chili.  There will be slide show presentation in the evening as well as plenty of CSX action at the park.  All proceeds will go towards improvements and maintenance of the park.

News
  • New Hadley Detector:  NS has a new detector located at B378.6 on the Chicago District.  This new detector is the same kind that is used on the Fostoria District.  The old TSA at 379.6 has been decomissioned.
  • Wabash RR Presentation At Library:  There will be an open presentation at the Allen County Public Library this Sunday (10/20) at 2pm.  See the Message Board for more info on this.

News
  • CSX C722 Returns:  Yesterday I heard C722 coming into Fort Wayne in the late evening.  This is the Fort Wayne-Warsaw local that runs on the Fort Wayne Secondary (ex-PRR), which was discontinued early last year.  I'm guessing that this replaces the Y120 that has been running the past few months.
  • Foreign Power On NS Lake Division:  For at least the past 2 weeks BNSF and UP power has been seen on several trains through Fort Wayne, many times in the lead, too.  I guess that gets to be pretty typical this time of year, though.
  • Tracks Paved Over:  I noticed the other day that the track across Taylor St. that goes into Slater Steel adjacent to the New Castle District has been paved over.  Also, the NYC crossing at Sherman Blvd. has also been paved over.
  • Auburn Right Of Way:  This is an interesting article from today's Journal Gazette on the usage of a Penn Central right-of-way in Auburn.

  • Q356/Q357 Schedule Changes:  These two trains now only operate 3 days per week.  Q356 runs on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.  Westbound Q357 departs Piqua Yard on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  This is a significant diminish in traffic levels on the ex-Pennsy CSX Fort Wayne Secondary.  The local (Y120) continues to operate out to SDI throughout the week.

News
  • Lima Depot Reborn:  Good news for Lima.  Bill reports that the former Pennsy depot in Lima OH is currently undergoing a restoration.  The city of Lima will use the building.  Check out this article from the Lima News for more info.
  • Other diverted traffic:  In addition to NS 179 & 180 mentioned below, auto rack train 287 is also making appearances on the New Castle District.  There are evidently some automation problems at the former LM Cabin in Columbus OH and NS is running these trains through Fort Wayne to avoid delays.
  • Circus Train Appearance:  On Monday, September 23rd the Ringling Bros. circus train is scheduled to depart Indianapolis for Grand Rapids, MI on NS via Elkhart, IN.  The presumed routing for the train would be up the Marion Branch to Goshen.  The train is scheduled to leave Indy at 4:30am.

  • NS 179/180:  For the past week or so 179 has been running through Fort Wayne on the Fostoria/New Castle District routing.  I have heard counterpart 180 a few times, also.  Maybe this will be its new permanent routing.  Normally this Bellevue-Chattanooga train runs through Columbus, OH.

News
  • Trackwork in Van Wert:  CSX is doing some maintenance on the Van Wert Industrial Track (ex-Cincinnati Northern) south of the Estry diamond.  They are replacing ties, crossings, and some rail sections.

CSX maintenance crews work on the Jackson St.
crossing in Van Wert today.  On the right a backhoe is
lifting a section of rubber for the new crossing.
Changes
  • New Trainweb Ad Banners:  You'll notice each page of this site now has an advertising banner on the top.  This is now required by our host (Trainweb.com)  So far I really don't mind the banners and they are less instrusive than ones on other web hosting sites.  Let me know if any files (sounds, pictures, movies, etc.) aren't working properly.

News
  • Huntington District Frequency Change:  Effective this morning the frequency for the Huntington District dispatcher is 160.380 (AAR Ch.18).  The New Castle District south of Winters Rd. remains on 160.440.
  • CSX Ballast Train:  Last evening I heard a BO39 (I think) coming into Piqua Yard on the Fort Wayne Line.  This train went out east this morning and is a ballast train.  I believe he was going to Van Wert.  20A followed right behind him.
  • Track Geometry Train:  The NS Track Geometry train (NS 907) came into town this evening on the New Castle District just after 6pm pulled by ex-Conrail SD50 #5411.  Looks like he will be parking at the Wabash Yard in New Haven tonight.

  • Chicago District Frequency Change:  Today Norfolk Southern changed the radio frequency for the Chicago District dispatcher to AAR Channel 92 (161.490).  The Fostoria District east of Dawkins still remains on AAR Ch. 76 (161.250).  This change also is in effect for the CSX Fort Wayne Secondary (PRR) from Mike westward and the New Castle District from Hugo north.  No idea why the change, but I suspect the Triple Crown yard traffic was part of it.

News
  • Airport Expressway Fatality:  This afternoon NS 197's lead locomotive (#6111) was struck by a pickup truck on the east side of the Airport Expressway crossing on the New Castle District.  The occupant of the truck was killed in the accident.  Airport Expressway was still closed as of 6pm.  Webmaster's comment - This crossing is in my neighborhood and I go across it almost daily.  I have always wondered why it does not have gates.  It is very easy to miss the flashers in bright sunlight, as they are so far off to the side of the road on the east and westbound sides.
  • Control Points on the Lake Division:  Recently NS has started naming interlockings in the fashion of Conrail on the Lake Division.  I have heard CP Hugo, CP Mike, and CP Runnion recently.  Anyone know why the nomenclature change?
  • NS 27V:  I heard this train westbound on the Huntington District this afternoon.  The normal route for this auto rack train is through Kalamazoo, MI and Elkhart.

News
  • Circus Train To Pass Through Fort Wayne:  The Ringling Brothers Blue Unit train is scheduled to pass through Fort Wayne sometime in the morning of June 11 (Tuesday).  It is supposed to run via the Huntington District between Fort Wayne and Peru, IN.  I am not sure if it will take the Fostoria District to Fort Wayne or the Chicago Line/Huntington District (Butler, IN) route.  The latter would be quicker I would think.  The train will be enroute from Wilkes Barre, PA to Oklahoma City.  According to this post on Trainorders.com it will be in New Haven at 9am and Peru, IN by 5pm (both local times).

  • Broughton Derailment - On Saturday night (6/1) NS 884, a loaded coal train, derailed about 50 cars near Broughton, Ohio on the Fostoria District.  Yesterday several trains were rerouted from Bellevue via the Toledo District (ex-WLE), Chicago Line, and Huntington District via Butler, IN.  As of this morning, the Fostoria District is open again.  Broughton is about 15 miles north of Van Wert, OH in central Paulding County.  Below is the official service alert from the NS Corporation website:
Derailment in Broughton, OH

June 2, 2002

Train 884 derailed 9:55 PM, 6/01 at Broughton, OH, between Bellevue, OH and Ft.
Wayne, IN. Derailment is on single track blocking main line. Trains are being diverted
over the Dearborn Division to expedite traffic. Customers with traffic moving thru this area
should expect delays of at least 24 hours or more.

  • NS W08:  I heard this train around noon today on the radio.  He went down the New Castle District from Junction and turned around to go west on the Huntington District at Hugo, just like W06 was doing before.  Possibly a GM empty rack train?

  • CSX OL Special:  The CSX Operation Lifesaver train ran through on the Garrett Sub on Tuesday (5/14).  He made a stop at Garrett.  Power was 2 F40PHs.  There were a couple of pictures of the train in Wednesday's Journal-Gazette.
  • Detoured Intermodal - NS 20W:  This train passed through on the Huntington District a couple of times the past few days, sometimes with BNSF power.  Evidently BNSF had a line closure through Illinois and they rerouted it through on the NS a couple of times.  It ran Huntington District to Butler, then Chicago Line east.
  • NS 217/218 Routing:  These two trains started using the Fostoria District routing this past weekend.  We'll see how long it lasts.  I believe they are doing trackwork on the New Castle District in Hartford City.  This might be the reason for the Bellevue route.

  • Local Operational Notes:  10E has been running on the Fostoria District for the past week or so.  Counterpart 11E continues to run via Toledo.  Mail train 21T has not been operating every day for a while and is frequently being combined with 21A many days.  CSX Y120 I've recently caught a few times going east out to the Whitley SDI plant pulling several gons of scrap metal.  Potash train 60T operated on Friday (4/5) down the New Castle District pulled by 9158 and 9357.  This train had a mix of different types of hoppers and no CN ones like last year.

  • NS New Castle District Notes:  I noticed today that the Ossian TSA detector at CF173.5 no longer gives axle counts.  Also NS is installing gates at CR 850N (Industrial Park Rd.) on the south side of Ossian.  This crossing only had crossbuck & stop sign protection before.  Let's hope Winters Rd. and County Line Rd. will be upgraded next.

  • Monster 197:  The past few weeks NS 197 has been a huge train after making his pickup at East Wayne Yard.  I've seen him a couple of times with 7 engines.
  • CSX Fostoria Derailment:  There was a derailment in Fostoria on Wednesday (2/13) on the Willard Sub.  To the best of my knowledge, CSX did not detour any trains on the Fort Wayne Line.  Maybe somebody else knows better.  I was up on the Garrett Sub on Thursday and there were few lulls in action.  This is the story from Thursday's Toledo Blade.
  • A Scare In Leipsic:  Early Thursday morning there was a little mishap in Leipsic, OH at the CSX/NS diamonds east of town.  The crew on NS 207 put the train into emergency after the home signal apparently dropped on them.  The train crew was released from the hospital in Lima (they had bailed off the train).  These are Lima News articles from Friday and from today.
